OWNERS of a former police station have applied to turn it into housing.

Wilton Police Station, at 45 Russell Street, closed in January 2020 just before Covid but reopened on a temporary basis to carry out operational policing services.

The two-storey building was converted into a police station in 1990 but it hadn't had a staffed front counter service for more than 10 years when all operations ceased in December 2022.

It was acquired by the Somerset-based Gainsborough Group Construction when employees moved to Bourne Hill as part of a process to centralise police resources in Wiltshire.

The site, which already has residential accommodation attached to it, sits within Flood Zone 3 but the applicant said surface water flows down Russell Street.

Apex Planning Design, on behalf of the Gainsborough Group, commented: "The site lends itself to its original use through its position surrounded by residential development on a narrow side road within the village of Wilton.

"It is difficult to see how it could be utilised for any other purpose, whether that be community based or commercial."

The deadline for consultation on the application is November 3.
