A Whitsbury woman rose to the challenge in October to walk 100 miles in the fight against breast cancer.

Jane Hacker, 55, who works in the radiology department at Salisbury District Hospital, took on the challenge issued by Breast Cancer Now to go the distance with her own two feet, raising £1,355 in the process.

Jane said: “It’s been most challenging and I just wanted to thank everybody for helping me donate so much money.”

Breast cancer has affected Jane’s life for many years, with family and later herself being diagnosed with the disease. Her mother, Shirley Hacker, 80, beat breast cancer 20 years ago. In 2020, Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer and joined her mother as a survivor of the disease. Sadly, Jane lost a cousin who did not survive her battle with a more aggressive breast cancer.

Jane said: “It’s always been close to my heart, and I’ve done lots of the Races for Life, as well.”

Jane was joined on some of her walks by her mother, Shirley, sister Janet Day, 61, and friend Jane White, 56, who joined her on a nine-mile walk.

Jane said: “I’m just absolutely over the moon over the people; lots of people at work donated, and people from all over.”
