PERMISSION to convert a former police station into housing has been granted.

The Gainsborough Group was granted planning permission to develop Wilton Police Station, at 45 Russell Street, into 'Russell Mews' on November 7.

Wiltshire Police permanently closed the two-storey building in December 2022 and soon afterwards a Somerset-based construction company acquired the site.

The developer plans to erect two three-bedroom market houses.

James Reed, group digital director at the Gainsborough Group, described the building as an "eye-sore" in its current state.

He said: "The former Wilton Police Station stood as a somewhat jarring contrast to the idyllic beauty of the surrounding area, particularly along Russell Street in Wilton.

"The disuse and neglect of the building rendered it an eye-sore in this otherwise charming village location.

"Our endeavour aims not just to redevelop but to seamlessly integrate the historical charm of this area into the fabric of our project."

Wiltshire Council approved the planning application but said the external infill brickwork must match the existing building and work must start within three years.
