A SALISBURY-BORN man says he was "flabbergasted" after finding an exact full-size replica of Wiltshire's historic Stonehenge.

Christopher Densham, who grew up in Salisbury, attending Bishop Wordsworth's School, recently got a taste of home while travelling through Australia.

He said: "Recently on my travels in Western Australia I visited a full-size replica of the UK's Stonehenge. I was flabbergasted.

"The replica was built from local granite and resembles the original layout of Stonehenge. Even positioning the stones for the summer and winter solstice."

Salisbury Journal:

The replica itself is called 'Esperance Stonehenge' and is located in the town of Esperance (hence the name), and is 15178km away from the original.

Comprised of 137 stones and weighing 2,500 tonnes, Esperance Stonehenge was built approximately 4,000 years after the original.

Esperance Stonehenge is the only full-size replica of the UK monument in the world.

It appears as the original would have looked around 1950BC.

The stones are carved from Esperance Pink Granite, and they were all quarried locally in Esperance.

The replica Stonehenge was built to align with the Solstices in Esperance.

On the morning of the Summer Solstice, usually on December, 21 or 22, the Sun's rays align with the Heel Stones and shine through to the altar stone.

The sunset of the Winter Solstice June, 21, repeats the same alignment in reverse.
