A yellow weather warning has been issued for much of Wiltshire with “strong and gusty winds” expected to hit the county.

The warning will be in place from 11am on Saturday, December 30, until 3am the following day.

It will cover much of the South West, including Wiltshire towns such as Chippenham, Trowbridge, Devizes, Salisbury, and Calne.

While Swindon is not covered in the warning strong winds are still forecast for the town throughout Saturday.

The Met Office has warned that delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely as a result of the winds, while short term loss of power and other services is also possible.

High-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges are expected to be particularly vulnerable to delays.

Some bus and train services may be affected by any potential delays to travel, with some journeys taking longer than usual.

Residents have been warned to take precautions to protect themselves and their properties, including securing loose items such as bins, trampolines, garden furniture and sheds.

Motorists have been urged to plan ahead when travelling and should drive slowly to minimise the impact of wind gusts where possible.

Extra care should be taken when overtaking cyclists, motorcyclists, lorries and buses.
