MP John Glen visited residents affected by flooding yesterday afternoon.

It comes after the River Avon burst its banks in Salisbury and the surrounding villages, flooding car parks, roads and homes.

Ashley Road was affected particularly badly, and some homeowners had to be evacuated.

Britford village has also been heavily flooded for most of the weekend.

Mr Glen told the Journal that he spent most of Sunday afternoon visiting homeowners.

In the St Paul’s area he spoke with one of  Salisbury City Council's leaders Annie Riddle and ward Councillor Sam Charleston who, alongside Cllr Sven Hocking, helped out local residents in their division late into Saturday night as water entered properties. Cllr Paul Sample has also been helping residents.

He then moved on to meet a number of Britford residents where more properties were impacted.

He was given a tour around the landscape and used the conversations to help prepare for the visit of Philip Duffy, the Chief Executive of the Environment Agency who Mr Glen said is making a "timely but pre-planned" visit to Britford on Friday.

Mr Glen added in a statement to the Journal: "I have invited Councillors from neighbouring divisions to attend - but we will want to understand when the £30m River Park works will be completed, and in Britford how the riparian responsibilities can be optimally supervised and undertaken.

"The delicate ecosystem between climate, human existence and housing needs will need to be managed with ever greater sensitivity if we are to avoid the devastation experienced by a small number this weekend. I will be making enquiries of Wiltshire Council around sand bag availability and work with Cllrs to ensure all support available is provided as quickly as possible."
