A MAIN road in Salisbury will be closed for nearly two weeks so a gas leak can be repaired and a 24-mile diversion route will be put in place.

There will be no access to Castle Road from Castle Roundabout from Monday, February 5, to Saturday, February 17, as SGN must carry out an "urgent" programme of work.

The gas company will be replacing a leaking section of pipes located on Churchill Way West, A36, and the northbound lane of Castle Road, A345.

SGN has said replacing the gas pipe is the only permanent solution to address continuous leaks that cause disruptive, unplanned emergency repair work on Castle Road.

The work will be broken down into two phases.

Phase one will see the A36 closed from the exit of Waitrose along to Castle Roundabout with no northbound access to Castle Road. Access to Waitrose will not be affected.

This will mean the north side of Castle Roundabout will be closed and SGN has advised drivers to follow a 24-mile diversion route through Porton to Cholderton, through Amesbury and back down the A345.

The proposed route takes roughly 40 minutes to travel.

Phase two, from February 17 to 26 will see the southbound lanes of Castle Road reopen but made two way while further work is carried out on the northbound lane.

SGN has been contacted for more information.
