Wiltshire residents have been warned flooding is possible with torrential rain set to hit the region on Thursday.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain, covering large parts of southern England, and parts of south Wales.

Forecasters say that flooding is possible.

The warning is in place from 2am on Thursday morning until 6am on Friday.

A spokesperson for The Met Office said: "Periods of heavy rain will bring the possibility of some disruption, particularly to transport."

Bus and train services will also "probably" be affected, residents have been warned, with journey times taking longer

Spray and flooding on roads are also likely to make journey times longer

A spokesperson said: "A couple of bands of rain, heavy in places, will push northwards across southern England and south Wales during Thursday and early on Friday.

"Whilst a drier interlude is likely for a time during the middle part of Thursday, many places in the warning area will see 15-25 mm of rain accumulate during this period.

"However, some higher ground areas of southern England and south Wales could see as much as 35-45 mm of rain."

People who might be affected have been advised to check if their property could be at risk of flooding and if so, prepare a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

People planning to travel during this period have been told to give themselves the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, and amending their travel plans if necessary.

And on the off-chance of a power cut happening, people have been encouraged to prepare by gathering torches and batteries and getting a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

Finally, the spokesperson added: "Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area."

After several incidences of flooding in Swindon this autumn and winter, local flood response has been a hot topic for Swindon Borough Council.

Last month it was agreed that the cabinet member for environment and transport would prepare a report for the overview and scrutiny committee to review flood risks in Swindon and also review the performance of the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA)
