PENSIONERS living with dementia have been welcomed into a Salisbury cinema for free viewings as part of a charity initiative.

Everyman hosted its first 'dementia-friendly' matinee specifically designed for over 60s and those living with dementia was held on Tuesday, February 6, with around 50 people turning up to see 'Shall We Dance'.

The cinema lights are left on low so that guests feel comfortable moving around if needed.

Care company Home Instead Salisbury and Romsey launched the initiative, which supports Silver Salisbury.

Jonathan Gapper, managing director of Home Instead, said: “It’s such a pleasure to be able to sponsor such special sessions at the Everyman theatre. It’s important that we make such joys in life such as going to the cinema, accessible to all, including those living with dementia.

"I’m really proud to be part of this. The first event was a huge success with around 50 people coming along to enjoy an afternoon in front of the silver screen”.

The matinees include a complimentary tea or coffee and are free to attend. A charitable donation is welcome, with all donations made to Silver Salisbury, a local charity aiming to reduce loneliness and isolation by supporting older people to be active in their local community.

Speaking of the initiative, Irene Kohler, chair of Silver Salisbury, said: “Thanks to our local community who came along to the first event, we were able to raise an amazing £139.85.

"Going to the cinema is such an enjoyable experience so we’re really grateful that the Everyman and Home Instead are providing a way for older people in our community, particularly those with dementia, to enjoy this activity in a way that feels comfortable to them."

Philip Bendall, manager at Everyman, added: “Being able to host such special matinees in our cinema is a real pleasure, it’s great to see so many local people come and enjoy a great film, a hot beverage and the company of others. We look forward to the next one."

The next screening is Tuesday, March 5, at 1pm at the Everyman Cinema, 17 Endless Street, when the matinee will be Forest Gump.

All are welcome and there is no need to pre-book, however priority will be given to those living with dementia and their families or carers.
