A BOY was taken to hospital after being rescued from a river.

Emergency services were called to the River Nadder, near Lower Road, Bemerton, at approximately 5.20pm on Sunday, March 17, where a young male was hanging onto a tree branch above the river.

Two ambulance crews, along with a responding officer, two fire crews from Salisbury and Wilton and a wading team from Fordingbridge.

Specialist water rescue teams from Fareham and Poole as well as specialist crews from the fire service later attended the scene, and were able to safely remove the child from the river.

A statement from South West Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 17.20pm on Sunday, March 17 to an incident in Bemerton.

"We sent two double-crewed land ambulances and a responding officer and conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Salisbury District Hospital."

A spokesperson from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Wiltshire Police called us to Lower Road, Salisbury at 5.21pm on Sunday, March 17, where a young male was hanging onto a tree branch above the river.

"Two crews initially attended, from Salisbury and Wilton, together with a wading team from Fordingbridge.

"They kept the casualty safe until the arrival of specialist water rescue teams from Fareham and Poole; he was then rescued and handed into the care of the ambulance service. Our stop was at 6.22pm."
