TWO houses were set on fire following back-to-back lightning strikes last night.

Bolts of lightning struck two homes in Wiltshire during storm on Thursday, March 28.

Residents of a semi-detached house in Cherry Tree Way, Amesbury, were forced to evacuate after a fire engulfed the roof of their home.

Neighbours reported hearing a loud clap of thunder at 5.32pm and saw smoke pluming from the house just minutes later.

They confirmed that the homeowner left the house along with her pets and she had not returned the following morning, March 29.

Two fire crews from Salisbury initially rushed to the scene and called for backup upon arrival to which two more crews answered alongside an aerial ladder platform.

The fire service stopped at 7.51pm but returned the following morning for a reinspection at around 8.50am.

Meanwhile, 15 minutes up the road in Tidworth, another house was also on fire.

A house in George VI Road was struck by lightning at 5.27pm, causing a fire which spread from the corner of the roof.

Crews from Ludgershall and Amesbury fire stations attended "rapidly" and used a thermal imaging camera to check for any hotspots.

None were found which confirmed there would be no fire spread.
