A specialist centre in Salisbury for people living with dementia had double the reason to be happy - it celebrated its first birthday and won a major national award.

Scots Lane Club, which opened in March 2023 following a major renovation project by Alzheimer's Support, currently provides a full day out for 44 people weekly.

Last month, the facility won the dementia category at the Markel 3rd Sector Care Awards, alongside other clubs run by the same charity.

Heidi Bradley, manager at the Scots Lane, said: "I'm so proud of what the team here has achieved.

"It is so rewarding knowing that each club member is having a lovely, fun day and that the family carers they depend on get a well-deserved day off."

Derrick, a founder member who comes twice a week, said the centre had become an important part of his life.

He said: "I enjoy meeting new people and broadening my horizons.

"It also gives my wife, who is my carer, a chance to have a break too."

Marian, another member, said: "The club makes me feel a part of something and I love being with my best friend [and fellow club member] Wendy."

The day club team at Alzheimer's Support also won the dementia category at the awards where the judges commended them for the individual attention given to members and a relaxed club atmosphere.

Grant Newton, head of day care at Alzheimer's Support, said: "The team here in Salisbury have done a remarkable job. This is the fourth club I’ve been involved in opening in Wiltshire and this one took off like a rocket. The community here in Salisbury really needed this place. It's been full, pretty much, from day one.

"Winning the 3rd Sector Care Award for dementia care for all four of our Wiltshire clubs was a very special moment."

The Salisbury club, after £100,000 was raised for renovation and equipment, opened with the support from businesses, local community and organisations.

The club is now supported by the National Lottery and Salisbury City Council, as well as by individual fundraisers.

Mr Newton added: “We are so grateful to everyone who donated or fundraised to help us create this very special place and for continuing to support the club. It is amazing to see what we and the Salisbury community have created together.”
