A BUSY Salisbury road will remain closed until the middle of next week after a 'gas escape'.

The emergency services were called to Fisherton Street at 1.15pm on Saturday, April 20 after a smell of gas was reported.

A cordon is in place at the roundabout which links South Western Road and Dews Road.

The Journal understands that businesses along Fisherton Street remain open as normal.

Southern Gas Networks (SGN) issued an update at 10.30pm on Saturday, April 20. They said: “Our engineers have identified a gas escape in the middle of the carriageway, therefore Fisherton Street remains closed westbound at the roundabout of Dew Road and South Western Road.

“A signed diversion route is in place for motorists.

“We know this is a busy area and want to apologise for the disruption this is causing.

“All being well, we hope to have completed our emergency work, reinstated the road surface, and have the road fully re-opened by the middle of next week.”

Fire crews attended to make sure the area was safe until SGN engineers arrived.

Wiltshire Police have been approached for comment.

The closure is likely adding to the driving woes around Salisbury. Back in August, works for the Fisherton Gateway Project began - turning the road into a one-way street.

The overall Fisherton Gateway scheme won’t be completed until this summer.
