WORK to improve Fisherton Street has suffered delays but the council remains confident it will be done by the end of summer.

Milestone employees carrying out phase one of the Fisherton Gateway project have encountered "numerous" shallow and uncharted utility pipes since work began last August.

Additionally, aging infrastructure has resulted in several gas leaks along the street causing further disruption to the project.

Almost one year on, Wiltshire Council is still aiming to have all the works along Fisherton Street completed by the end of summer 2024.

This, however, is subject to encountering any further "utility challenges".

Councillor Nick Holder, Wiltshire's cabinet member for highways, street scene and flooding, said the gas mains in Fisherton Street had now been lined top help prevent any more issues.

He added: "Our contractor, Milestone, has been working hard and over the last few weeks progress has improved and completed areas are becoming increasingly evident.

“Last week the kerbs and concrete bays were installed in Area G, which is the section between Dews Road and North Street. Signs and street furniture will shortly be installed in this area, with paving works following over the next few weeks.

"Milestone will continue to liaise with those businesses closest to the works to ensure their customers have access to their premises and deliveries can be made. Fisherton Street is very much open for business."

Cllr Holder apologised for the ongoing disruption, adding: "We would like to thank local businesses and residents for bearing with us and for their continued co-operation in delivering this important scheme for Salisbury.”
