WHETHER the work on Fisherton Street and the Station Approach benefit the city in the long run only time will tell.
I believe one thing is for sure: the pounding by heavy traffic on New Street and the New Canal has degraded those streets to such an extent that further traffic chaos is inevitable when the two streets are, inevitably, resurfaced and repaired.
The New Street/High Street crossing's surface is terrible and not what a tourist city should suffer.
Churchfields Industrial Estate needs better access and that bridge to Harnham still needs building, but I fear the medieval streets will continue for a long time to carry traffic which is totally inappropriate.
