SALISBURY Rugby Club enjoyed a memorable afternoon on Saturday with the 1st XV facing a strengthened Marlborough, along with the triumphant return of the 3rd XV rugby away at Fordingbridge. Match report by Joe Cooper.
The standout story was the welcome return of a 3rd XV, marking an important step in the club’s player development pathway.
Travelling to nearby Fordingbridge for a friendly, the newly assembled side blended emerging Colts with experienced campaigners, offering younger players a valuable introduction to senior rugby. After a slow start that saw the hosts establish a 14–0 lead, Salisbury responded impressively with two well-taken tries to narrow the deficit to 14–12 at the break.
The second half developed into an open, high-scoring contest, with both defences struggling to contain pace out wide. Salisbury’s youthful energy proved decisive, as a succession of long-range tries secured a convincing 53–26 victory.

Beyond the result, the fixture represented a crucial re-establishment of depth within the club, underlining a renewed commitment to nurturing talent and sustaining competitive rugby at all levels.
Meanwhile, the 1st XV faced a challenging afternoon away against Marlborough Nomads. Despite a competitive opening, Salisbury ultimately fell to a 44 - 20 defeat against a well-organised opposition bolstered by several first-team players. Marlborough struck early and capitalised on key moments, including an injury setback for Salisbury, to build a 17 - 8 half-time lead.
Salisbury showed resilience throughout, with tries from Mike Adams and Sam Goldsmith keeping them in contention. However, the hosts’ pace and strength in the back line proved decisive as they extended their advantage in the second half. A late converted try added respectability to the scoreline, but the Nomads’ clinical finishing ensured a deserved victory.
While the 1st XV result was disappointing, the day as a whole carried a positive narrative for Salisbury RFC. The reintroduction of a 3rd team not only strengthens squad depth but also provides a vital bridge for the Colts progressing into senior rugby - an encouraging sign for the club’s long-term sustainability.
