Work to improve key walking and cycling route in Salisbury

Green Lane in Salisbury, located between Roman Road and Pearce Way, will see upgrades aimed at creating a safer, more accessible path for pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders.

The improvements are part of the Salisbury Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) and are funded through a mix of Active Travel England grant funding and developer contributions.

Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 18, and is expected to continue until October.

Cllr Martin Smith, cabinet member for highways at Wiltshire Council, said: "This scheme will make a real difference for people who use Green Lane regularly and for anyone who wants to walk, cycle or ride more as part of their everyday journeys.

"By improving safety and access, we're helping to make active travel a realistic and attractive choice.

"Projects like this support the ambitions set out in Our Wiltshire Plan, by promoting low-carbon travel and improving road safety as part of a greener Wiltshire where everyone can travel confidently and sustainably."

The work will be carried out in four main phases to minimise disruption, with each phase focused on a different section of Green Lane or the surrounding roads.

Improvements will include resurfacing parts of Green Lane to make it more comfortable and accessible for all users, installing new street lighting for improved safety, and adding a new parallel crossing on Pearce Way.

This crossing will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross together on a raised table.

Traffic calming measures will also be introduced on Roman Road to slow vehicles and improve crossing safety.

Advance warning signs will be installed before work begins, and signed diversion routes will be in place where closures are necessary.

The council says access for residents, pedestrians, and cyclists will be maintained wherever possible throughout the works.

The first phase of the project involves a temporary closure of the Green Lane bridleway for surface preparation and safety works, followed by improvement works on sections away from main road junctions.

This will be followed by the installation of traffic calming on Roman Road and, finally, the introduction of the new parallel crossing on Pearce Way.
