MOD targets public with challenge to spot hidden snipers

Launched as part of the MOD’s Respect the Range campaign, the interactive "Spot the Sniper" challenge features realistic photos taken in military training environments.

The images were captured across Salisbury Plain Training Area, depicting woodland, scrubland, and open terrain.

Each photo contains a highly trained sniper concealed using military camouflage techniques, inviting the public to test whether they can identify the hidden soldier before their position is revealed.

Brigadier Gavin Hatcher, head of overseas and training estate, said: "Our Armed Forces train year-round to maintain their readiness and operational capability.

"Although some training may be clearly visible, much of it can take place without being seen or heard.

"It is important not to assume an area is inactive simply because there is no obvious military presence.

"We urge the public to support our Armed Forces by accessing MOD land only when and where it is permitted and by adhering to all access information."

The campaign aims to highlight the risks associated with unauthorised entry into training areas and to demonstrate just how effectively personnel can remain unseen.

An Army spokesperson emphasised the importance of uninterrupted training.

The spokesperson said: "When we're on an exercise, we're training exactly to replicate real-world scenarios.

"A key part of our job is to remain undetected.

"This requires total focus and concentration.

"It's vital that we can carry out training without interruption to maintain the skills and readiness we may need to rely on at a moment's notice."

The MOD is reminding the public that while some areas of MOD land are accessible, strict guidelines must be followed to ensure safety.

These include observing all signage and instructions from MOD personnel.

If a red flag is raised or a red light is flashing, entry is strictly forbidden.

Visitors are asked to stick to public footpaths, bridleways, and designated rights of way, and to keep dogs under close control.

People are also advised never to touch military debris and to report any they come across for safe removal.

Other guidance includes refraining from lighting fires or using barbecues.

People are also reminded to dispose of cigarettes and litter properly.

The MOD continues to remind the public that unseen dangers may be present even when no military activity is immediately visible or audible.
