The first in the year’s Organ Recital Series - the brilliant young organist Ashley Grote, Assistant Director of Music and Organist at Gloucester Cathedral, gives the prestigious Alcock Recital in the Cathedral on Wednesday 21 April at 7.30pm.

This year, the Cathedral is running its Organ Recital Series in collaboration with the John Armitage Memorial Trust (JAM) and therefore programming music by living British composers in each recital to fulfil JAM’s remit to support new music.

Given this, it seems fitting to include several younger performers who are at the cutting edge of organ performance in Britain today.

Ashley opens the recital with Vierne’s Symphonie II in E minor Op 20 and it is followed by Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in E minor BWV 548. To fulfil the JAM remit he has chosen Passacaglia and Fugue Op 35 by John Joubert (b.1927).

His recital ends with Walton’s dazzling concert piece Prelude and Fugue ‘The Spitfire’. Tickets, £8.00, from (01722) 320333, or at the door.

Sunday Afternoon Organ Recitals (2.30pm - 2.55pm) are performed during term-time by members of the Cathedral’s music department and guests. Please see the music scheme to find out who is playing.
