WORKING with numbers and forms all day, you could be forgiven for thinking that being an accounts clerk is rather tedious.

But, not a bit of it says Gillian Grinter, whose infectious enthusiasm for her job is self-evident.

Gillian works as an accounts clerk with established Salisbury-based employment agency Personnel Placements, suppliers of both temporary and permanent staff to businesses in Salisbury and the surrounding area.

Gillian's main responsibility is the busy weekly payroll, catering as it does for the large number of temps employed by the recruitment specialists.

"I simply love my job," she beams.

"Because it deals with people and I like helping people.

"It is a good combination of numbers and a mix with people.

I also like being occupied and with a payroll you are constantly busy.

"There is no such thing as a slack period. Payroll starts on a Thursday afternoon, to be completed by Monday before being sent to the bank."

As well as having contact with temps, she also has to liaise with consultants and clients, but it is Gillian who is the point of contact for all things financial when a new temp signs on at the agency.

"The temps bring me their documents and I get them registered on the payroll.

"They also come to me with their tax problems, and I help them to fill in their forms, which can help reduce their tax burden.

"Really, it is all a matter of the right forms, but the temps know they can come and see me if they have any payroll query, I am always available to help."

Describing herself as something of a stickler', Gillian says: "I have to get everything right, but provided the temps have filled in their time sheets properly, there is rarely a difficulty."

Gillian works from Personnel Placement's office in Oatmeal Row, overlooking Salisbury Market Square, and shares her office with bookkeeper Rita Mintern.

Gillian and Rita are something of a double act, having worked together since 1988.

"We get on so well together, it is lovely.

"We worked together in our last company and following redundancy I came here as a temp, and six months later Rita did the same, and here we are."

With Gillian and Rita on the books', the accounts department at Personnel Placements is in good hands.

"We are on the go the whole time," smiles Gillian.

"It's a busy agency to run, you know."
