ONLY three schools in Salisbury and South Wiltshire have so far registered their interest in becoming academies under the government’s new scheme.

They are Bishop Wordsworth’s, St Edmund’s and Greentrees Primary.

Two of these – Bishop Wordsworth’s School and Greentrees Primary School – are rated outstanding by Ofsted, meaning that they would automatically be granted freedom from local authority control if their governing bodies decided to pursue the idea. In theory this could happen as soon as September, although the headteachers of both schools say they need a lot more information and are not in any hurry.

For schools not yet rated outstanding, the application process will begin later in the year.
