RINGWOOD charity Community First New Forest is hosting a special event to help other charities and community groups in the area to beat the recession.

Beat the Squeeze is being held on Tuesday, December 7 at Lyndhurst Community Centre.

Delegates will discuss the impact of the Government's spending cuts on voluntary and community groups in the Forest.

Community First's voluntary and community services manager Jackie Hartless said: “Anyone running a voluntary group, charity or not-for-profit organisation is almost certain to be concerned about the availability of funding to support them in 2011/12 and beyond.

“As groups start to plan budgets and programmes for next year, this is the time to gather information and ideas about how to make the most of the funding which is still available.

“As well as giving information on where to access support, we are focusing on encouraging organisations to develop the expertise to generate their own independent funding streams, crucial at a time when traditional funding is disappearing and funders are becoming more prescriptive about how their money should be used.

“We will continue to collect evidence about the impact of the economic situation and advising the sector accordingly.”

Jackie believes that the current climate, whilst hugely challenging, brings opportunities with it and added: “The sector is uniquely placed to help those most badly affected by the recession - by delivering advice and other services and by providing pathways to both greater skills and to learning, often through volunteering.”

Presentations about managing financial efficiencies, sustainable business management and alternative funding options will be included at the event.
