PLANS to open a dementia centre and day club in Salisbury have been revived by Alzheimer’s Support.

The project to transform the ground floor of Scots House, Scots Lane, was put on hold during the pandemic.

But now the charity is launching a £140,000 fundraising appeal to create the purpose-designed centre.Salisbury Journal:

The Scots Lane dementia centre will house a day club for up to 40 people each week.

There will also be space for Salisbury’s two dementia advisers and a memory café, plus the teams running singing and art groups as well as the charity’s award-winning Home Support Service across South Wiltshire.

People affected by dementia, or just worried about their memory or that of a relative, will be able to drop in for support and advice.

Alzheimer’s Support CEO Babs Harris said: “We are thrilled to have found these premises in a quiet location in the heart of the city.

“It’s an ambitious project and one which will fill a huge gap and help people living with dementia and their families find the support they need.

“There is no specialist dementia day care in Salisbury and we know the difference that a supportive, engaging club environment can make to people living with dementia and to family carers.

“We have already had great support from many people in Salisbury, and are looking forward to working with the community to create something really special.”

Alzheimer’s Support’s says there are more than 7,000 people living with dementia in the Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) area. Of these 66 per cent have a diagnosis.

The charity has a dementia centre in Warminster, which opened in 2018, and also runs clubs in Devizes and Trowbridge.
