A WRESTLING legend is set to return to Amesbury ahead of his 40th anniversary in the sport.

Lewis Blain, from Winterbourne Gunner, began his wrestling career in 1983 and went on to win championships across Europe before signing with TV promoters Dale Martin.

His Salisbury debut in 1987 sold out the City Hall and generated a lot of attention in the press.

Mr Blain continued to wrestle alongside names such as Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks and Kendo Nagasaki before calling it quits in 1994.

However, promoters brought him back in 1994 as WWE's popularity was blowing up in America.

Mr Blain said: "It was a different business from wristlocks and headlocks it went to entertainment and colour being more important."

The heavyweight wrestler went on to win championships across the country and formed a team to compete across the south west.

He will return to Amesbury for an event at the Bowman Centre at 7pm on Saturday, June 10, as the master of ceremonies.

Mr Blain added: "What I like about today's business is it is for the whole family and is so colourful and entertaining not men in black trunks swapping holds.

"Although the skill levels are higher if anything."

Next year sees Mr Blain's 40 years in wrestling and he plans to wrestle several events to mark this before focusing on his promoting and announcing duties.
