On a day where the weather was as unpredictable as the performances on the field, Wiltshire faced off against Dorset in the NCCA T20 Competition.
The forecast promised rain, and it didn’t disappoint, leading to a dramatic day of cricket.
Game 1: Wiltshire Triumphs in Rain-Shortened Match
Winning the toss, Wiltshire opted to field first, hoping to take advantage of the damp conditions.
Dorset's opening pair, Will Tripcony and Finn Gordon, had been in excellent form, but today was a different story.
Tripcony was dismissed early by Rhys Baker, who had the wicket keeper Jake Goodwin diving full length for a spectacular catch.
Just two balls later, Felix Organ followed him back to the pavilion, leaving Dorset in trouble.
Finn Gordon attempted to hit a big shot but fell short, allowing Will Naish to take a catch at the boundary.
Former Wiltshire player Dylan Church managed to score 31 runs, but he was the sixth wicket to fall, leaving Dorset struggling at 86 for 6.
Connor Smith added a modest 14 runs, but no other batter reached double figures.
Rhys Baker finished with impressive figures of 3 wickets for 27 runs, while Alfie Johnson was named the Wadworth Man of the Day with 3 wickets for just 13 runs in his 4 overs.
The Wiltshire bowlers were relentless, and Dorset was all out for a mere 107 runs.
In response, Wiltshire's openers Tom Cheater and Jack Mynott started aggressively, racing to 69 without losing a wicket in just 7.5 overs.
Cheater scored a quick 45 not out off 28 balls, including 7 fours and a six.
However, as the rain intensified, the match was halted, and after a lunch break, the umpires decided to end the game early.
Thanks to the Duckworth-Lewis method, Wiltshire was declared the winner with a revised target of just 35 runs from the 7.5 overs they had faced.
Game 2: Dorset Strikes Back
In the second match, Wiltshire again chose to field first.
The Dorset batters faced a tough challenge, with Finn Gordon falling early to a catch by Wiltshire's skipper, Ed Young.
Felix Organ, however, fought back valiantly, scoring a solid 56 runs before being bowled by Young.
The Wiltshire bowlers continued to apply pressure, with Rhys Baker and William Brown causing problems with their pace.
Unfortunately, Charan Chahal suffered an injury while fielding, which was a significant blow for Wiltshire.
Despite this, Dorset managed to post a total of 131 for 7.
As Wiltshire began their chase, the day took a sharp turn.
The heroes of the first game, Cheater and Mynott, were dismissed for just 3 runs combined.
The Dorset bowlers, led by Ethan Baker who took 3 wickets for 17 runs, wreaked havoc on the Wiltshire batting lineup.
Finn Gordon and Felix Organ also contributed with 2 wickets each, ensuring that only Sam Ashman (27 runs) and Jake Goodwin (10 runs) reached double figures.
In a day filled with ups and downs, the players and supporters of Wiltshire CC expressed their best wishes for Charan Chahal’s speedy recovery.
With one win and one loss, the team now looks ahead to their upcoming three-day Championship games against Wales on July 20th-22nd at Bemerton, the home of South Wilts CC.
