South Wilts will be playing in the top flight of ECB Southern Premier League cricket again next season.

The club’s immediate future was assured with a 119-run victory over bottom-of-the-table Basingstoke & North Hants, who had to win at Bemerton themselves to avoid relegation.

South Wilts’ victory owed much to a match-turning 163-run stand between centurion captain Ben Draper and Tom Cheater, who lifted their side from a desperate 39-3 and into an unassailable position at 301-8.

South Wilts opening pair, James Degg and Harry Broderick, along with Aussie Peter Rowe, were all back in the Wilton Road pavilion before 40 runs were scored.

Cheater, with six boundaries and two sixes in his 74, and Draper took control and by mid-afternoon Basingstoke looked demoralised, awaiting the inevitable.

Draper went on to post 121, his first Premier League hundred since August 2022, as South Wilts batted their visitors out of the contest.

Bad went to worst when Matt Donaldson was run out immediately after tea - Basingstoke losing their pinch-hitter opener after a sixth ball mix-up.

Eight batters made starts after that, but only Brad Neal (29) and George Metzger (28) progressed beyond 25 as left-arm spinner Archie Fairfax-Ross wheeled away for a 4-53 return.

Basingstoke were dismissed for 182.
