Gabriel Williams hits century for South Wilts 2nd XI win

2nd XI 297 for 6 (24 pts) vs Verwood 1st XI 181 all out (8 pts)

The 2nd XI travelled to Verwood looking to maintain pressure on the early leaders in County Division 2A.

Winning the toss, skipper Tom Pearce elected to bat first on what appeared to be a green-tinged surface.

Liam Vermeulen and Lawrence Yeo negotiated the early conditions well, putting on 65 for the first wicket before Vermeulen departed for an entertaining 36.

That brought young Gabriel Williams to the crease and the young South Wilts batter quickly settled into his work.

Yeo continued to anchor the innings before falling for a valuable 45 with the score on 120 for 2.

Pearce then joined Williams and together they produced the defining partnership of the match.

Adding 105 runs together, they steadily took the game away from Verwood.

Pearce eventually departed for an excellent 42, while Williams continued to accumulate runs all around the ground.

The youngster eventually reached a magnificent first century for the 2nd XI, another landmark moment in what is becoming a highly promising season.

He was eventually run out for a superb 103 while attempting to accelerate towards the end of the innings.

Late not out contributions from Ivo Leyland (16) and Jasper Blackwood (21) helped South Wilts post an imposing 297.

The reply started perfectly when Marc Burton struck early to leave Verwood 11 for 1.

From there, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals as South Wilts maintained control throughout.

Verwood moved to 48 for 2, 75 for 3, 114 for 4, 119 for 5 and 122 for 6 as the visitors steadily tightened their grip on proceedings.

Some stubborn lower-order resistance delayed the inevitable, but South Wilts remained patient and eventually claimed the final wicket through Tom Barrett.

Tom Pearce completed a superb all-round performance, following up his 42 with outstanding figures of 4 for 34.

Vermeulen added 2 for 35 and Burton returned an excellent 2 for 33.

The victory secured maximum points and keeps the 2nd XI firmly on the heels of Calmore and Winton at the top of the table.

3rd XI 69 for 3 (22 pts) vs Great Durnford 1st XI 64 all out (1 pt)

The 3rd XI made the short trip to picturesque Great Durnford, where the surroundings perhaps deserved a better game than the one that played out.

Great Durnford won the toss and chose to bat, but quickly found themselves in deep trouble as South Wilts' bowlers took control from the outset.

At 33 for 4 the hosts were already struggling, and despite some resistance from captain and wicketkeeper Nick Hill, wickets continued to tumble.

The score quickly became 53 for 5 to 64 all out which never seemed enough for Great Durnford to defend.

With such a modest target, South Wilts knew maximum points would require a disciplined chase and the loss of no more than one wicket.

Unfortunately, a combination of the tricky surface and perhaps a touch of complacency saw Wright, Vincent and Flo Sharman all depart cheaply.

Fortunately, opener Jonas Ball remained calm throughout, finishing unbeaten on 24, while Adam Smith added 12 as South Wilts secured a comfortable and short afternoon's work with a seven-wicket victory.

The result earns 22 valuable points and, coupled with results elsewhere, lifts the 3rd XI into second place in County Division 4B as we move towards the halfway stage of the season.

4th XI 237 for 6 (23 pts) vs Shrewton 2nd XI 231 for 8 (10 pts)

The 4th XI hosted local friends and neighbours Shrewton 2nd XI on the Academy Ground and produced another thrilling game for those congregated in attendance.

After winning the toss, South Wilts elected to bat first.

A couple of early wickets meant rebuilding work was required, and Miles Jones and Jon Nash responded brilliantly with what turned out to be a match-winning 112 partnership.

Nash Senior led the way with a superb unbeaten 91, while Jones Senior contributed an excellent 68 as the pair showed the juniors how to build and then accelerate an innings with some fine shot-making, laying the foundations for a highly competitive total.

South Wilts eventually closed on 237 for 6 from their 40 overs, a strong score but one that still felt very chaseable on the Academy Ground.

Shrewton started impressively and at 112 for 1 looked favourites to claim the points.

However, the dismissal of Dave Hatchett at 113 for 2 proved a pivotal moment.

From there, South Wilts gradually worked their way back into the game, taking regular wickets and slowly applying run-rate pressure to the visitors.

It was the variation of Alex Evans causing the damage with a fine return of 4 for 46.

Rich Barnett remained unbeaten on an excellent 82 and threatened to take the game away from South Wilts, but ultimately ran out of overs.

The hosts held their nerve superbly to secure a thrilling six-run victory and claim 23 valuable points, such a valuable experience for some of the younger players to come through a tight game.

The win provides a welcome boost and moves the fourth XI further clear of the relegation places in County Division 5E.
