FA Vase fifth round (Saturday, February 9)
Spennymoor Town 4
Bemerton Heath Harlequins 2
Scorers: Young, O’Keefe.
BEMERTON Heath Harlequins’ FA Vase dream ended in County Durham after falling to a 4-2 defeat against the tournament’s red hot favourites.
The Salisbury side, who were hoping to break club history, got off to a remarkable start. Within the first two minutes prolific frontman Danny Young pounced on a corner which Spennymoor Town failed to clear.
But to Ian Chalk’s disappointment they found themselves on level terms, as Mark Davidson charged down the right to slot home a swift counter-attack. And suddenly Craig Ruddy put the hosts 2-1 up before the interval.
Harlequins held their heads high, and Kane O’Keefe placed his side right back in the tie with a well-taken goal.
With the game wide-open, it was the hosts who ran away with it.
Gavin Cogdon restored his side’s advantage and late on Davidson secured Spennymoor’s place in Monday’s quarter-final draw along with a cheque for £2,500.
• Chalk’s men are back in action tomorrow evening (Monday, February 11) at Western Way against Gosport Borough in the Russell Cotes Cup Quarter-final.
