SOUTH Wilts are closing in on a trophy treble after claiming two pieces of silverware in the last seven days.

James Hayward’s side were emphatic winners over Burridge in the Southern Electric t20 Cup final at the Ageas Bowl last week and then added the Southern Electric Premier League’s Division 1 Time Pennant, despite their match with St Cross Symondians being abandoned in mid-afternoon last Saturday, writes MIKE VIMPANY.

The non-result may have been an anti-climatic way of sealing the Time Pennant, but it is the fifth time in six seasons South Wilts have won the title, and their sights are now firmly set on regaining their SEPL crown to make it a trophy treble.

South Wilts, having seen Steve Riddle bowled by Richard Logan (2-30) off the first ball of the match, went on to post 239-6 in 64 overs.

St Cross were 12 without loss after seven overs when the rains came.

Teenage duo Jack Mynott (61) and Ryan Burl (48) caught the eye before lunch – the Zimbabwean left-hander being stumped two short of his half-century off the bowling of Jordan Finney, who jointly tops the Premier League bowling charts.

Having reached 150-3 at lunch, South Wilts wobbled, losing James Hayward, TomMorton (42) and Joe Cranch in quick succession.

Finney picked up 4-89 – taking his season’s wicket tally to 27 – before James Hibberd (39) and Rob Franklin (32 not out) rallied to take the final total to 239-6.

South Wilts visit bogey opponents Alton in their final Time pennant match on Saturday.

South Wilts II, third in SEPL Division 3, were thwarted by the rain as they pushed for victory against relegation threatened Portsmouth & Southsea.

Left-hander Tom Cowley (98) led South Wilts II to 235-9, but the rains arrived with P & S 62-3.

But with Havant II losing to Portsmouth, Tom Pearce’s team have narrowed the gap to 21 points.

“Being realistic, we need to win every game from here on in if we are to get promoted, but there’s no reason why we can’t do it,” Pearce said.
