SALISBURY Rugby Club's under 11s overcame opposition from across the south west to win the Chippenham RFC mini rugby festival on Sunday.

They beat Bath 10-0 in a scintillating final that earned praise from Bristol and England scrum-half Sean Perry who, presenting the winning trophy, complimented Salisbury on being by far the best team.

Salisbury, led by captain Rory Jennings, defended with great determination to keep Bath out before responding with two well-worked team tries in the second half.

The team travels to Nottingham today to take part in the national mini rugby festival.

The final will be held at Twickenham next month.

Several members of Salisbury's under 14s side are in action today, representing Wiltshire against a Northampton Schools side, skippered by Charles Jennings.

Elsewhere, a brave performance from Salisbury under 16s could not save them from a 22-5 defeat at the hands of a powerful Havant side.

Havant dominated the early exchanges but Salisbury gradually began to take control, Craig Newman scoring the opening try only for the Hampshire side to respond on the stroke of half time, assisted by a lucky bounce of the ball.

Salisbury continued to dominate possession from the line out but Havant hung on and scored a second before putting the game beyond doubt with two quick scores as Salisbury began to tire.

Nevertheless, there were plenty of encouraging performances from the Salisbury players, particularly four under 15s, Mikey Daniels, Tom Sheppard, James Starkey and David Tonge, who stepped up and were not found wanting.

Meanwhile Salisbury's under 15s travelled to Oakmedians and won a tough encounter 15-0 after putting in a splendid performance.

Flanker Jon Hall was rewarded for his fiery performance, crashing over from close range to claim the first score.

Joe Alward strode clear for the second and a great move at the start of the second half saw Alex Devereux squeeze through the narrowest of gaps to further extend the lead.

A quartet of Salisbury under 17 girls, Ellen Heathcote, Lucy Phipps, Amy Hicks and Alice Foster, represented the South West northern region against the West Mid-lands at Hartpury College, Gloucester on Sunday, losing a hard-fought contest 22-7.
