LOUISA Lockwood enjoyed a successful time at her local event, Somerley Horse Trials, steering a number of her charges into high placings.

The Winterbourne Stoke rider's promising young mare Desert Island, owned by a local syndicate, did well to finish 11th out of 70 top class competitors.

She turned in confident rounds in the showjumping and cross country but missed out on a higher position due to a discrepancy in the marking of her dressage performance.

Desert Island will now tackle her first advanced course at Weston Park.

Meanwhile two novices, Polish horse Wasal and former showjumper Joe Doe both impressed.

Wasal was placed seventh, while Joe Doe jumped a double clear only to miss out on a placing due to his slower cross country time.

Somerley International Horse Trials, which have been going from strength to strength in recent years, welcomed competitors from 14 countries and featured a number of members of Britain's Olympic equestrian team.

At last week's Gatcombe Horse Trials, both The Diva and Lucia di Lammermoor earned placings in the Open Intermediate section.
