SALISBURY City have completed the signing of Woking goalkeeper James Bittner.

The 25-year-old, who becomes the club's sixth full-time professional player, is no stranger to the Raymond McEnhill Stadium.

He made 24 appearances for City as a youngster during the ill-fated 2001/02 season, which ended with the Whites being relegated to the Eastern Division of the Southern League, prompting the restructuring of the club and the appointment of Nick Holmes as manager.

Meanwhile, Bittner's career took him to AFC Bournemouth, Exeter City (42 appearances) and Torquay United from where he joined Woking in December last year.

The Devizes-born player made a dozen appearances for the Cards last term.

Salisbury player-coach Tommy Widdrington said: "We're delighted to have secured the services of another top quality goalkeeper."

He explained that Bittner's arrival would increase the level of competition for the number one shirt, currently held by Ryan Clarke, who turned pro with the club earlier this summer.

"It's a specialist position and it's one you can't mess about with at this level of football," added the player-coach.

"Ryan had an outstanding season for us, but if the situation arises where we have to put someone else straight in, we have to do so with 100-per-cent confidence.

"James has got a lot of league and Conference experience and we're delighted he's joining us."

As well as the two goalkeepers, City's professional ranks include strikers Matt Tubbs and Robbie Matthews, midfielder Mike Fowler and recent signing Liam Feeney.

The Whites are due to begin pre-season training later this week, with their first friendly scheduled for Saturday, July 14 when they visit Weston-super-Mare.

Fixtures for City's debut season in the top-flight of non-league football are now expected to be announced on Tuesday.
