BROAD Chalke secured promotion from Hampshire League Regional Three North West division following a 178 run win over Whiteparish II, writes DECLAN WHITE.

Batting first the Broad Chalke openers Craig Johnson and Anthony Mercer put on an opening partnership of 93 for the first wicket.

Johnson scored a fantastic 139 not out with fellow opener Mercer scoring a fine 52 - his third league half century in a row.

Skipper Matt Irvine (11) and Joe Brewer (15) both fell cheaply leaving Steve Smith to roll back the years and score an impressive 31.

Broad Chalke finished on 269-from their 40 overs.

In reply, Whiteparish were soon losing wickets with a run out and a wicket for Irvine.

Geoff Dear (14) and Rich DaCosta (55 not out) frustrated the Broad Chalke attack with a third wicket partnership of 67, before Dear was ran out by Jason Cooper.

Along with a further run out, it was left to Anthony Mercer (2-13), Zac Bird (2-11) and Tom Parry (2-10) to take the remaining wickets with Whiteparish all out for 91.
