AMESBURY extended their unbeaten run to seven games with a 2-2 draw against visiting US Portsmouth.

However, this saw them slip from top spot of the Wessex League Division One as title rivals AFC Stoneham took over on goal difference.

Amesbury went a goal down after 10 minutes from a set piece corner which was well headed home.

This woke up the Blues and they seemed to come alive and got back on level terms with our own set piece from a free-kick which was finished well by Jack Vallis with a thumping header into the bottom corner.

Several missed opportunities and some poor finishing allowed US Pompey to stay in the game, but then after another free-kick, Vallis headed back across the goal for Tyler Brockway to smash home what looked like the winning goal with 10 minutes to play.

The Blues then missed two glowing opportunities late on, only for the visitors to conjure up what was a firm cross into the penalty area, which deflected off an unfortunate Jamie Ritchie, into the empty net for a late equaliser .

After the game manager Dave Coker said: "Personally I’m extremely disappointed with the result as we didn’t start or finish very well after our 2 week lay off over Christmas."

This Saturday, Amesbury are at home again with basement side Andover the visitors.
