DOWNTON went briefly to the top of the Wessex League Division One after they drew 1-1 at Fawley in the only Friday night game.

The home side took the lead in the contest after 49 minutes from Adam French. Downton levelled things just after the hour mark thanks to a sweetly struck free-kick from Dan Telfer.

Downton manager Ben Smith said: “This was two points lost I’m afraid, we started very well and had several good early chances which could have finished the game off not long in.

“We have a very exciting attacking side and towards the end of the game we started to get going.

He added: “There was an impressive performance from Ernest Osei in goal was another huge plus for the us. Going forward we have competition in all areas which I’ve never had before and the re signing of Diego Romero was another great addition to our side.”

This Saturday, Downton are home to Alton and on Tuesday travel to Andover New Street.
