LAST Saturday saw the start of Wiltshire’s first futsal league with eight teams and over 60 children playing at Five Rivers Leisure Centre in Salisbury.

The fast paced nature of the sport meant spectators were treated to 66 goals in the four matches.

The Wiltshire Youth Futsal League is an under-14/15 league aiming to expand to other age groups.

Students from Wiltshire College were on hand throughout the event, helping out with refereeing, scoring games and providing advice to coaches and players.

Stuart Garnett, founder of the new league said: " There has been a significant amount of planning for this event and I’m delighted it went so well. All of the players loved the experience and can’t wait until the next game."

Wiltshire FA are keen for the expansion of similar leagues across the county to boost participation of this fast growing sport and as part of the FA’s recent six year strategy to develop the game in England.

The next event takes place at Aldworth School in Basingstoke on the October 26 before returning back to Five Rivers in November.
