SALISBURY City's Matt Tubbs, who earlier this week was named in the England C team for this month's international against Wales, wants to make it a double celebration as he heads to Cheshire for the Blue Square Premier match with strugglers Northwich Victoria.

The 23-year-old striker is one goal short of a century for the in-form club, and hopes tomorrow's game will end with him having joined the exclusive list of City players in the ton-up club.

Just seven players have netted 100 goals in a City shirt - Tubbs' former strike partner Paul Sales being the most recent.

Since signing for the Whites from Dorchester Town in October 2003, Tubbs boasts a stunning strike-rate - one goal in every 1.88 games - his 99 coming from just 187 appearances (170 starts plus 17 sub appearances).

"As a striker you're aim is always to get one in every two games and I've done that," said the Salisbury-born forward. "I'm happy with my goal to game ratio."

Tubbs, who has played a key role in City's rise up the non-league pyramid in recent seasons, has already proved he can score at any level.

But having netted 11 so far this term, City's first in the top flight of the non-league game, he is keen to get the 100th out of the way.

"The sooner the better really!

"I was hoping to get it on our own patch against Forest Green Rovers last week, but if I can get it out of the way as soon as possible I'll be happy. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have the chance against Northwich."

Tubbs is 5/1 with league sponsors Blue Square to score the first goal in tomorrow's game.

Since missing a couple of games through injury, ironically sustained on international duty, he has returned to a rich vein of form at just the right time to stake a claim for a place in the England starting 11 for the Welsh contest.

Representing his country means a great deal to Tubbs and says that seeing those famous Three Lions on his shirt fills him with tremendous pride.

"It's an unbelievable feeling. As a kid you always dream about representing your country. At whatever level and in whatever sport. To represent England as a footballer is just unbelievable."

The former Bolton Wanderers and AFC Bournemouth trainee currently has two England caps to his credit.

He marked his debut for Paul Fairclough's team with a goal against the Republic of Ireland in last summer's home international tournament, which was staged in Scotland.

However, he was ruled out of the games with Scotland and Wales after picking up an injury late on.

Recalled for the first International Challenge Trophy (Group A) game, against Finland in Helsinki in November, Tubbs again found the net, but again suffered an injury.

"Two goals in two games and an injury in both of them - the same foot too. Hopefully this time I can get another goal, but stay clear of injury!"

Those thoughts are seconded by his club manager Nick Holmes who said: "Matt thoroughly deserves his chance to play for England again. He's come back from injury and been very lively for us. He deserves his call-up."

But Tubbs, who turned pro with Salisbury at the start of the season, is quick to acknowledge his City team mates, whose run of eight games undefeated has certainly helped his own international cause.

"I can pick three or four other lads in the Salisbury team who could and probably should represent their country.

"The team has done well so far this season and that's helped me get selected. But if they keep doing well their chance will come too."

This month's match with Wales, to be played at Exeter City's ground on February 20, will be the first time he has represented England in his home country.

And he's likely to have plenty of support at St James Park.

"A lot of my family and close friends will be coming down for the match and hopefully we'll get a few Salisbury supporters there too."

Tickets for the England-Wales match are on sale now priced £5 (adults) and £1 (concessions). Ring the ticket hotline on 01392 411243 for full details or visit the FA's website.
