Salisbury Under-14s produced a thrilling late comeback to secure victory over Oakamedians Under-14s in the final of the Dorset & Wilts Cup on Sunday, in what proved to be an absorbing and hard-fought contest from start to finish.

Families, friends, and coaches gathered on the sidelines, eager to witness what promised to be a competitive encounter between two well-matched sides who had both impressed on their run to the final.

Oakamedians made a brighter start to the game, putting early pressure on Salisbury and making their attacking intent clear. Their efforts were rewarded as they established control in the first half, managing to break through Salisbury’s defence and build a lead. As the second half got underway, Oakamedians continued to apply pressure and extended their lead further, leaving Salisbury staring at what looked like a daunting 15-point deficit well into the half. At that stage, the momentum appeared to be firmly with Oakamedians, and Salisbury faced a significant challenge to turn the game around.

However, showing great determination, resilience, and team spirit, the Salisbury youngsters refused to let the game slip away. Gradually, they began to find their rhythm, gaining more possession and territory as their confidence grew. Their persistence soon paid off, as they broke through to score their first try of the game, giving them a much-needed boost and reigniting belief among the players and supporters alike.

What followed was an impressive spell of attacking rugby from Salisbury. Building on their momentum, they ran in three tries in quick succession, each one expertly converted, dramatically narrowing the gap and shifting the balance of the game. With each score, the energy on the sidelines grew, as Salisbury edged to within just a single point of Oakamedians.

With time running out and the tension rising, the final minute of the match provided a dramatic conclusion. Salisbury launched one last determined attack, pushing forward with purpose and composure. Their efforts culminated in a decisive moment as they surged over the try line to score what would prove to be the winning try.

The subsequent conversion was calmly taken and sailed straight between the posts, putting Salisbury ahead for the first time in the match. Moments later, the referee blew the final whistle, confirming a remarkable 28–22 victory and sparking celebrations among the Salisbury players, coaches, and supporters.

It was a wonderful performance by the Salisbury squad, whose perseverance and teamwork saw them overturn a significant deficit in impressive fashion. The players were cheered on throughout by proud parents, coaches, and supporters, who shared in the excitement of the dramatic turnaround.

At the conclusion of the match, the Deputy President of Dorset & Wilts RFU, Nigel Matt Ravers, presented the cup and medals to the players, bringing an end to an exciting and memorable final that showcased the talent and spirit of youth rugby in the region.
