SEVEN-STAR Salisbury poured more misery on relegated Wantage Town with a 7-0 hammering to climb up to third in the league.

Tommy Wright notched four goals - soaring to the top of the goal chart -  and strikes from Claudio Herbert, Eddie Perrett and Taurean Roberts saw Whites take a step closer to securing a home advantage in the play-offs.

Nearest rivals Tiverton Town drew with Swindon Supermarine while they are now within a point of Taunton Town, who were held at home to champions Hereford.

Saturday's rout at a sun-filled Ray Mac began on 14 minutes when Lewis Benson clipped in a teasing cross to the far post where Herbert sent a stooping header past Eddie Cavanagh.

Ten minutes later, playmaker Franklyn Clarke lofted a cross into the box which Charlie Wise headed onto his own crossbar.

A second was looming and it arrived on the half hour mark courtesy of Perrett's low range strike.

Wright added a third moments before the break as he pounced on a loose ball and rounded Cavanagh before slotting into an empty net.

Shortly after the restart, Salisbury were awarded a penalty when Wright was felled by Cameron McNeil who was dismissed. The striker met the penalty with utter conviction, lashing into the top corner for a 4-0 cushion.

Despite the visitors' time in the Southern League has come to a halt earlier than expected, they didn't give up and skipper Mark Francis, who once donned a Salisbury City shirt, went on a mazy run. He beat makeshift centre-half George Colson but sent a tame shot at a quiet Alex Bass.

At the other end, Whites fired two goals in six minutes to make it 6-0.

Roberts rounded off a super team move before Wright rounded two defenders and finished with aplomb.

Perrett and Sam Roberts, back from a lengthy injury, both sent shots into the stands as Whites looked to add a seventh.

Wantage tried to get on the scoresheet before they departed south Wiltshire and were gifted the chance five minutes from time.

Substitute Kalum Youngsam appeared to be fouled just outside the area but was awarded a penalty. Mason Hathway stepped up and his low spot kick was parried by Bass.

Late on, Whites added a seventh as Chris Onoufriou's knock into the box was tapped home by Wright, a goal which takes him up to 35 in the league, three ahead of nearest-challenger Levi Landricombe of Tiverton Town.
