READING your article (Salisbury Journal, January 14) that Appleby’s closed for business, I have fond memories from when I worked there as a young 18-yearold, around 1970, for about two years.

I did my baker/confectioner apprenticeship at Appleby’s with day release to Salisbury College.

My role was jamming doughnuts, helping to make the bread, icing cakes, and I can remember Saturday mornings were a busy time with queues waiting outside for the shop to open. There was a delivery van delivering bread all around Salisbury.

I have good memories working with Mark’s father Doug, who then ran the business, and of Brian Penn and Ruby Sheppard who worked there then. Mark was still at school when I worked there. It was a pleasure to have worked at Appleby’s and I wish Mark every success for the future.
