MAY I say thank you to your contributor Keith Musgrave: in Postbag (August 30) his letter - entitled Tate Salisbury - describes Young Gallery as “wonderful”. His enthusiasm is appreciated.
Recent investment in gallery infrastructure has meant that, during the last 10 months, we have exhibited, free-of-charge, original works by – among others - Kollwitz, Bacon, Freud, Hockney, Roy Eastland, Ken Kiff, Hodgkin, Piper and Sutherland. Visitors this year have come from as far away as Norwich, Wales, Nottinghamshire, France, Sweden, and the purlieus of Tate Britain itself- and their number is growing.
Overall, attendance has been impressive.
I pay tribute here, too, to the gallery’s volunteers, and the support the gallery receives from Wiltshire Council and the Arts Council England.
The gallery’s newly-constituted Members Group is planning to offer everyone an evening talk by Ian McKeever RA, slated for 19 September; a £5 charge on the door includes refreshments.
At the gallery we firmly believe we have a substantial part to play in helping Salisbury recover – commercially, and culturally – from the cruel Novichok attacks of 2018.
In addition to fine art the gallery offers not only life drawing classes but also workshops – masterminded by Kim Harrison, on education@younggallerysalisbury.co.uk – for children.
Finally, I invite everyone to join us at the special “private view” opening of the Ian McKeever show: it starts at 6.30pm on 7 September – please do come and celebrate this unique resource, and become part of our mission to bring great art to Salisbury.
