As a frequent driver along the A36 I suffer with many others the dreadful congestion along the Southampton Road caused by dismal planning decisions.
The journey is, however, made even worse by the illiterate sign put up near the Tesco roundabout.
Darkness is a noun, not an adjective.
The sign should either read “Intermittent lighting during hours of darkness” or “intermittent lighting during dark hours”.
And it is of course a tautology anyway as who will notice intermittent lighting NOT in dark hours?
I despair for our language.
Better to say, avoiding the convoluted wording so favoured by the public sector, “Street lights may switch on and off at night”, or best of all, just “Street lights may switch on and off”.
