A LIGHT aeroplane was burnt to ashes overnight.

The Dynamic WT-9, at Old Sarum Airfield, worth around £70k was targeted at the same time as a van on the site.

It is believed to be one of a series of arson attacks that took place in the early hours in Salisbury, Amesbury, Durrington and Porton.

Co-owners Nigel Lilley and Nigel Herrington, both from Farley, found out this morning after receiving a phone call from the air traffic controller.

Mr Lilley who learnt to fly at Old Sarum ten years ago said: "We got a call at about 8am to say our aeroplane was a pile of ash.

"The controller didn't know at the time about the rest [of the arson attacks] but he said he couldn't believe it wasn't a deliberate act.

"I could cry at any second."

Mr Herrington added: "On the CCTV you can see the van burning and the glow of flames from our plane when it caught fire - we think an accelerant was poured onto the top of the plane.

"Our plane was the only one there with a cover which would have provided the source of ignition for anyone setting it on fire.

"It was our pride and joy, and it's absolutely tragic."

The two friends bought the plane with a third person around eight years ago.
