Face masks are to become compulsory in three schools in Salisbury as "an additional precaution".

From October 5, students at Wyvern College, Trafalgar School and Salisbury Sixth Form College will have to cover their mouth and nose.

Last week, it was confirmed a member of staff at Wyvern tested positive for coronavirus.

The decision, taken by Magna Learning Partnership, won't affect students in the classroom who are already in a bubble, and in outdoor areas.

However, students will be required to wear masks as they enter the school building, in communal areas and in corridors at lesson changeover.

A letter sent out to parents, signed by CEO Sarah Busby, says: "Although the COVID-19 risk to young people is, thankfully, reported to be very low, young people can pass on the infection to others who may be more vulnerable. We would like to reassure families that our schools and college are doing an excellent job to ensure that students are as safe in school as they can be; this face mask measure is an additional precaution to add to the safety measures in place.

"The MLP policy on the wearing of face masks in school/college will be reviewed on a regular basis in line with guidance from the DfE and Public Health England. We reserve the right to change our position, with the expectation of your continued support."

Before the change comes into force, students are advised to wear masks.

The parents of students who are exempt from wearing them due to medical reasons are urged to contact the school by Friday and provide evidence of medical exemption.
