The mum of a little boy with Down's Syndrome is sharing positive messages about the condition on the night a pregnancy termination storyline is being aired on national TV.

Kirsty Safe, 37, had previously spoken out against Emmerdale's decision to run a series of episodes in which a couple decide to end their pregnancy upon discovering their baby has Down's Syndrome.

The storyline with Laurel and Jai, played by Charlotte Bellamy and Chris Bisson, is due to begin tonight (November 30) at 7pm.

But instead of watching the episode, Kirsty, whose three-year-old son son Keldan has Down's Syndrome, will be spreading some positivity on social media, supported by charity 'Wouldn't Change a Thing'.

Talking about seeing the termination storyline air on TV, the mum-of-five, who lives in Ludgershall, said: "I'm dreading it, Emmerdale have very much stuck by it and asked people to give it a chance and okay, they've got a point - how can you jump on how disgusting it is if you haven't seen it?

"But they started the storyline on Friday night (November 27) with Laurel and Jay discovering about the pregnancy, they were overjoyed and if they were overjoyed it makes me think that they're ending it solely on the Down's Syndrome side of it and not because it's not the right thing for them."

Since the producers' storyline was revealed, and following their decision to go ahead with it, different campaign groups surrounding Down's Syndrome have responded to it in different ways.

Some have launched a petition, while others plan to complain to Ofcom at the end of each episode.

Charity 'Wouldn't Change a Thing' have taken a different route - bringing forward the launch of their Christmas campaign, which includes a song, to coincide with the airing of the storyline.

Chairman Jamie McCallum said: "Our campaigns are intended to challenge the negative outdated misconceptions about Down's Syndrome among the general public by showing insights into the true lives experienced by families today.

"We know that these negative misconceptions will be a key issue for the characters in this storyline, so this seemed like an appropriate area to shine a light on."

The campaign centres around a new song - ‘What Do You See’ - written by musician and grandfather Tom Kerr who changed his outlook on Down's Syndrome after seeing a photo of his new grandchild alongside a girl living with the condition.

"Part of me wants [to watch it] but I don't know if I can get through it so I'll be focusing my time helping them spread awareness and flooding social media with positive messages," said Kirsty.

"I am going to watch it to see what they show but I'll do that tomorrow when I can control the episode, stop it and fast-forward."
