A SALISBURY pub's appeal for donations for for refugees from Afghanistan has received tremendous support from the community.

The donations filled a double-decker bus and trailer, which are currently being transported to Care4Calais depot in Taunton after setting off earlier this afternoon.

Some last minute donations were brought along to the Guildhall Square before the vehicles set off for the journey to Somerset.

Salisbury Journal:

The George and Dragon, on Castle Street, announced last month that it had teamed up with Care4Calais, a charity delivering essential aid and support to refugees living in the UK, Northern France and Belgium.

Since then the pub has been flooded with donations.

Salisbury Journal:

Landlord Nathan Lamb said the response from the community has been "incredible" but admits he only expected to have donations to fill "a van or maybe two" not a double decker bus and trailer.

"Salisbury has been brilliant," he added. "Just thank you - stand tall and stand proud. It is the community that has done this."

It took around three hours to pack up all the donations this morning.

Salisbury Journal:

The bus has been kindly supplied by Salisbury Reds and the trailer by Fieldfare Trailer Centre.

Salisbury Journal:

The city's deputy mayor, Cllr Tom Corbin was also in attendance to see the donations start their journey to the Care4Calais depot.

He thanked everyone who has supported the appeal as well as Salisbury Reds and Fieldfare Trailer Company, adding: "The support shown is astounding. It just shows the community at its best and the community spirit of those that have helped."
