A BISHOP Wordsworth's student has been suspended from school and questioned by police after posting threatening material on social media.

The Year 10 student, who cannot be named for legal reasons, posted the material on a private account and uploaded it outside of school.

But it was targeted against members of the "school community".

Once school staff discovered the material, the police were informed immediately and they came to the school site, took statements and removed the boy for further questioning.

He has now been bailed pending further investigation and action, with the bail conditions stating that he must not visit either the main school site or the playing fields at Britford Lane.

In a letter seen by the Journal that has been sent to parents, Head Master Stuart Smallwood said it is likely that the ensuing police work will be part of a lengthy process.

Further action will follow depending on the outcome of the police investigation.

Dr Smallwood added that the school has taken the matter "extremely seriously and have acted with all possible speed with the safety of the whole school community driving the decision making process".

He said that it is the first such incident that he has encountered in around 35 years in education.

He added: "I am hugely grateful to the boys who brought this information to our attention and it is down to their mature and sensible actions that we have been able to protect the safety of the school community.

"Furthermore, I was most impressed with the calm, sensible and determined way in which my pastoral staff dealt with such a difficult and stressful incident. I was wholly reassured by their professionalism, and that of the police officers who attended yesterday afternoon. Because of them you can be reassured that Bishop’s continues to be a place where safety is of paramount importance."

There is support in place for students and victims if they need it.

The school said it would not be commenting further at this time.
