EMERGENCY repairs following a gas leak earlier this week are "progressing well", according to SGN.

Fisherton Street was locked down to pedestrians on Saturday, April 20, after a member of the public reported a smell of gas.

The fire service rushed to the scene and police closed the road until SGN gas engineers arrived.

Since then, the road has remained closed causing disruption as confused drivers found themselves stuck on a diversion route.

A spokesperson for SGN said Fisherton Street will fully reopen on Thursday, April 25, if a further inspection and final work goes to plan.

The spokesperson added: "Our emergency work in the road is progressing well.

"We’ll have the road surface where we’ve been working fully reinstated. That has to be given enough time to set properly before motorists can safely drive along the road again.

"Our work will then be able to continue working within the contractors existing lane closure in Fisherton Street."

Business owners are feeling frustrated with the continued disruption.

Michael Higginson, 48, owns Marley's Headshop, and told the Journal he's considering leaving the city after almost nine years because it's turned into a "ghost town".
